Mastering the Logbook: What Every Learner Driver in Victoria Needs to Know

Learning to drive is more than just getting behind the wheel — in Victoria, Australia, learner drivers under 21 must keep a logbook to prove they’re ready for the next step. Here’s your complete guide to logbook requirements in Victoria — and how to make the most of your practice time!

Why is the Logbook Important?

Your learner logbook is your record of practice driving. It shows VicRoads that you’ve gained enough supervised experience to drive safely on your own when you go for your Ps (probationary licence).

If you’re under 21, you must complete at least 120 hours of supervised driving, including at least 20 hours at night, and record them all in your logbook.

Who Needs to Keep a Logbook?

  • Learners aged under 21: Yes, mandatory.
  • Learners aged 21 and over: No minimum hours required, so the logbook isn’t compulsory — but it’s still a good idea to track your progress.

What to Record in the Logbook?

Every supervised driving session you complete as a learner must be written down. Make sure you include:

  • Date of the drive
  • Start and end times
  • How many kilometres you drove
  • Whether it was day or night
  • Signature of your supervising driver for each session
  • Details of the supervising driver: name, licence number, and signature

Pro tip: Use the official VicRoads Learner Logbook, which you receive when you get your Ls, or download the myLearners app to record hours digitally.

What Counts as Night Driving?

Any driving you do between sunset and sunrise counts as night hours. You need at least 20 night driving hours logged as part of your 120 total.

What’s the 120-Hour Rule?

Before you can take your driving test:

  • You must have held your learner permit for at least 12 months (if under 21).
  • You must have completed and logged at least 120 hours of supervised driving.

Your supervising driver must hold a full, unrestricted licence.

Digital Logbook Option

You don’t have to stick to paper — the myLearners app by VicRoads makes tracking your hours simple, accurate, and easy to submit when you’re ready for your driving test. Both you and your supervisor can sign off on drives through the app.

Tips for Filling Out Your Logbook

  • Always record each session straight after driving.
  • Practice in a variety of conditions: wet weather, highways, city traffic, country roads.
  • Make sure your supervisor signs each entry.
  • Aim for more than 120 hours if possible — the more experience, the better!
