What Happens After You Get Your P-Plates?

Getting your P-plates is an exciting milestone for every new driver. After months of lessons, practice, and passing the driving test, you finally have the freedom to drive on your own. But what really happens after you get your P1 or P2 licence in Victoria? Let’s break it down so you know what to expect on your driving journey.

The Freedom of Driving Solo

Once you receive your P-plates, you can legally drive without a supervising driver. This gives you independence and flexibility—but it also comes with greater responsibility. Remember, safe driving habits are just as important now as when you were learning.

P1 (Red P-Plates) Rules in Victoria

If you are on your P1 licence, there are specific rules you must follow:

  • You must display red P-plates clearly on your car.
  • You cannot use a mobile phone (even hands-free or with Bluetooth).
  • Peer passenger restrictions apply if you’re under 21—you can only carry one passenger aged 16–21 (with some exceptions).
  • Strict zero alcohol limit.

P2 (Green P-Plates) Rules in Victoria

When you progress to your P2 licence:

  • You must display green P-plates.
  • Mobile phone restrictions remain in place (no handheld use). The alcohol limit remains zero.
  • Passenger restrictions are lifted.

Duration of P-Plates

  • P1 licence: Minimum of 12 months
  • P2 licence: Minimum of 3 years (or until you turn 22, whichever is later). After successfully completing your P1 and P2 stages, you can graduate to a full driver’s licence.

Staying Safe as a P-Plater

Even though you’ve passed your driving test, you’re still considered a novice driver. Statistics show that P-plate drivers are at higher risk of accidents due to inexperience. That’s why it’s crucial to:

  • Drive within the speed limit.
  • Avoid distractions like phones or loud music.
  • Practise defensive driving.
  • Continue learning—confidence comes with experience.
