Winter Roads Need Winter Skills! Learn to Drive Safely This Season
Winter in Victoria can create some of the most challenging driving conditions for learner drivers. Wet roads, fog, reduced daylight, and sudden weather changes demand extra caution, sharper awareness, and smart driving techniques. At DOS Driving School, we believe every learner should feel confident behind the wheel — no matter the season.
Why Winter Driving is Different
During the winter months, roads are often wet or slippery, making it harder for tyres to grip the surface. Fog reduces visibility, rain can cause hydroplaning, and the shorter daylight hours mean more driving in the dark — all of which require different skills than in dry, clear conditions.
Essential Winter Driving Tips for Learners
1. Slow Down and Stay in Control
Speeding in winter is dangerous. Wet roads reduce traction, and it takes longer to stop. Drive slower than you normally would, especially during rain or fog.
2. Keep a Safe Distance
In wet or icy conditions, your braking distance increases. Always leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you — at least 3 to 5 seconds.
3. Use Your Lights Correctly
Use headlights during rain, fog, or low-light conditions. Avoid high beams in fog as they can reflect back and reduce visibility further. Always make sure your headlights and taillights are clean and working.
If your car starts to skid, don’t panic. Ease off the accelerator and steer gently in the direction you want to go. Our instructors at DOS Driving School will teach you how to respond calmly and correctly in these situations.
Look out for black ice, especially early in the morning. Also be cautious of fallen branches, puddles, or debris on regional roads.
Use the defogger or air conditioning to keep windows clear from moisture buildup. Visibility is key when road conditions are poor.
